The Time Machine (2002): Summary

The movie begins with the time traveler, Alex, at his school. We learn that he is a Professor at Columbia University and we also learn that he plans to propose to the woman he loves, Emma. However, right after he proposes, Emma is murdered by a robber when she tries to save her engagement ring. Four years later Alex tries to go back in time to save her using the time machine that he has developed. Instead of proposing in the park, he takes her to the city. Here, she is run over by a motorcar. After this event, Alex travels to the future to answer his question: Why can't I change the past? He first lands in 2030 and meets a holographic computer that claims his time travel ideas are ridiculous. Next he lands in 2037, only to find the earth has been destroyed by the deteriorating moon. Finally he lands in 802701. There he is taken care of a woman named Maura and her brother Kalen. We see the colony of the Eloi people that is built on the side of the mountain. He then gets to know Kalen and Maura better. It is on Alex's exploring the next day that he is introduced to the Morlocks. The people are warned by a horn and the Morlocks come out and attack the people. Then they take the people to their domain, under the Earth. Maura is taken and Alex resolves to save her. Kalen takes Alex to the caverns where knowledge is held and Alex learns about the divisions of humans into the Eloi and the Morlocks from the holographic computer. He travels to the world of the Morlocks through the mouth of the sphinx. Alex is caught by the Morlocks and is introduced to the Über-Morlock. Alex kills the Über-Morlock by taking him into the future and then Alex uses the time machine to destroy the Morlocks. He then lives with Maura and her brother. The movie ends with Alex's housekeeper and friend discussing that he has yet to come back and perhaps never will.
